Preparing for Recovery from Rhinoplasty

Finally, after years of wanting it and months of researching you have decided to undergo the life-changing cosmetic procedure of rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty, also known as nose surgery, helps to recreate the look of the nose. If you have always been unhappy with the size, shape, and angle of your nose, then rhinoplasty is a great option for you. Many patients do so much research into the procedure like accredited doctors, how it’s performed, and the costs. But you should also prepare yourself for the recovery time. Dr. Nicolette Picerno and Dr. Christopher Cote will go over your aftercare instructions with you at the time of the procedure.

Before the Procedure

The nose is an intricate part of the face made up of bones, cartilage, and soft tissue. To prepare yourself to undergo this complex procedure by one of the accredited surgeons at FacesFirst, your doctor will give you some instructions.

  • Quit smoking two months prior
  • Don’t take any anti-inflammatory drugs, aspirin, or herbal medications, as these can all increase bleeding
  • Drink lots of water

These few instructions can make a big difference in your procedure and the recovery time.

Recovering from Rhinoplasty

Although Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure, do not underestimate the amount of time it’ll take to recover. The surgery itself usually takes between one to three hours to perform, medications will be administered before, during, and after the procedure to reduce pain and swelling. You will need to wear a nose splint to support the new shape. The splint will typically be kept on the nose for up to ten days post-op. Your full recovery time will depend on how well you follow after-care instructions.

Things to Keep In Mind

  • Drink lots of water to stay hydrated
  • Keep taking your pain medications
  • You will need to sleep on your back at an angle for some time after surgery
  • Bruising, swelling, and minor discomfort will occur
  • You may get a dry throat
  • Recovery takes time

Recovery Time for Rhinoplasty

Since Rhinoplasty is a complex surgery, the recovery time can vary. Most often, patients will be able to return to work and most daily activities two to three weeks post-op. Since swelling and bruising vary, your recovery time could be rather shorter or longer than expected. It is important to follow up with your doctor before returning to full activities, especially strenuous activities such as exercise.

Your New Nose

An important thing to keep in mind when getting rhinoplasty is that the results are not immediate. During the recovery time, your nose will look swollen and bruised, but it is pertinent to stay positive. Once the swelling has gone down, you will start to see the results of your rhinoplasty. Many patients don’t see the full results until six months or a year after undergoing the procedure. It takes time for your bones and new shape to set. This procedure is for people who are looking for long-term results. Don’t get discouraged if you do not see your ideal nose right away.
